A few words about Lisbon
Lisbon is proud to be the host city of the ICOM-CC Triennial 16th Conference of in September 2011.
Most likely founded by the Phoenicians, influenced by the Moors and certainly enriched by the spice trade in the golden age of its overseas connections, Lisbon is an historic capital, a potpourri of unusual character and charm. An amalgam of more than 800 years of cultural influences mingles with modern trends and life style to create intricate and spectacular contrasts. The city is spread across seven hills always opening a window towards the splendid Tagus River (Rio Tejo).
Due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon has a pleasant climate throughout the year. The agreeable temperatures in the summer months are an open invitation for a walk by the river, or to spend an afternoon in one of the many street cafés to be found throughout the city. Although the temperatures may fall somewhat in the autumn and winter months, sunshine is usually a constant feature.
The cost of living is lower than in most European countries and Lisbon has one of the most competitive accommodation rates of all major European cities. It is considered to be one of the safest capitals in the world and its people are very tolerant thanks to centuries of enjoying and experiencing cross cultural influences from across the oceans.
According to recent research foreign conference delegates have rated the quality of Lisbon's lodging, food and beverage services, and public transportation prices highly. Triennial Conference delegates will receive a free five-day ticket to public network transportation, including underground, buses, and trams. Another aspect worth taking into account in looking forward to 2011 is the improvement of the city's infrastructure which has taken place in the last fifteen years. These changes represent a qualitative leap with regard to Lisbon's worldwide recognition. Since 1994 – the year Lisbon was European Capital of Culture – the city has hosted numerous events on a global scale, including Expo 98, two Laureus awards ceremonies, the 2004 European Football Championship, the final of the Masters in tennis, as well as three Rock in Rio music festivals.
